What are the Precious Minds, New Connections Parents Groups?
Is it support group, is it a parent education group, is it a children's education program, and is it a therapy or treatment program? It combines some activities and goals from each of these types of programs. Parents get together and share common interests and challenges related to their children, therefore is supportive. Parents can learn from each other and from the Nurturing Program curriculum which is used during the groups and provides information on topics such as potty training, nurturing your child, discipline, helping children develop empathy, etc. therefore it is educational. Children do follow a developmentally appropriate curriculum that follows the parent's curriculum so it is educational for children. It is not a therapy or treatment program although parents and children may find participation to be therapeutic, helpful, and supportive and a form of respite. The program usually runs for 12 weekly 2-hour sessions.

Who can participate?
Parents, caregivers, guardians, family members, relatives of children ages 0-4, who have a disability, developmental delay or are at – risk for delays. At-risk means extreme poverty, a parent or family member with a disability or delay, teen parents, foster parents.

What is the cost for the program?
The program is FREE

What about childcare and transportation?
Child care is provided by qualified child care providers in a safe setting. Transportation is provided on a "case by case" basis.

Why should I join?
Important information, every parent with a child with a disability NEEDS to know, regarding how to parent a child with a disability. The program provides a great way to meet other parents who share similar challenges and give opportunities for parents to network and discuss family strategies.

When are the groups held?
Groups are held at various times and dates throughout the counties of Bexar County. Classes are also held within local ISD's.
