Why do I have to be enrolled or take a class before I can qualify for support?
The Parent Alliance for Learning and Support is a Training Program centered on the understanding that the parent or young adult is the best advocate to speak on behalf of individual needs. In an Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD) Meeting, the parent or the young adult is a participating member of the ARD Committee, not the Advocate; therefore by attending the trainings/classes you are ensuring you are learning the process which will allow you to achieve the most appropriate education for yourself and your child. As the old saying goes – "You can give a man a fish and feed him for the day, or you can TEACH him to fish and feed him for a LIFETIME."
ARD Support is granted on a case by case basis and is with the understanding of the process involved, such as parent meeting with Advocate prior to ARD as well as preparing documentation necessary for ARD. Advocate's role in attendance is to "model" for parent and coach the parent though the process to ensure appropriate outcomes toward the educational plan.
